In response to the rapid growth of the biotech and healthcare-related industries, and the increasing demand for swift patent protection, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) has launched a dedicated team to handle biotech and healthcare-related patent applications. This new team consists of five divisions employing a total of 120 personnel. KIPO newly hired 35 private-sector experts as patent examiners and integrated them with the existing 85 examiners to form a specialized team dedicated to the examination of biotech and healthcare-related patent applications.
The divisions within this dedicated team include “Bioscience Technology Examination Division,” “Biological Diagnostics & Analysis Examination Division,” “Biopharmaceuticals Examination Division” (Biotechnology Field), “Healthcare Technology Examination Division” and “Healthcare Data Examination Division.” These divisions are specifically focused to biotech and healthcare-related technologies.
Biotech and healthcare technologies are projected to reach a global market value of approximately $3.3 trillion by 2027. Recognized as key national advanced strategic technologies, these fields are vital growth engines. In Korea, the number of patent applications in this sector has grown at an average annual rate of 8.2% over the past five years, which is about 3.5 times higher than the overall patent application growth rate of 2.3%. The establishment of this dedicated examination team reflects the unique nature of the biotech and healthcare-related industries, where R&D costs are substantial and market dominance can be secured by a relatively small number of high-quality patents.
